Platystele reflexa
A miniature epiphytic orchid from the cloud forests of Ecuador, producing tiny, precisely structured flowers that emerge directly from the base of a single, linear-lanceolate leaf. The lateral sepals are strongly reflexed while the petals remain erect, creating a distinctive open floral geometry that is characteristic of the genus and remarkable in its detail at such a small scale.
- Light: Low to medium indirect light with 60–80% shade cloth; avoid direct sun, which can desiccate the fine foliage and root system.
- Temperature: 48–68°F (9–20°C); a cool to intermediate grower that requires stable, mild temperatures and excellent air circulation.
- Humidity: 75–90%; very high humidity is essential, as the plant lacks pseudobulbs and has limited water storage capacity.
- Watering: Keep the mount or medium evenly moist at all times; never allow to dry out completely.
Additional Notes
Platystele reflexa is best grown mounted on cork or tree fern with a thin layer of sphagnum moss over the roots, or in a very small pot with a fine, moisture-retentive mix and strong air movement. Shipped bare root in well-established condition.
