Porroglossum schramii

Porroglossum schramii

A miniature species from the cloud forests of South America, producing solitary flowers on slender, upright inflorescences with broad, fused sepals that form a distinctive triangular, hooded structure tapering into elongated lateral tails. The hinged lip is highly sensitive to contact and snaps shut rapidly, a specialized adaptation for pollination by small insects.

  • Light: Low to medium indirect light with 70–80% shade cloth; avoid any direct sun exposure.
  • Temperature: 50–65°F (10–18°C); a cool grower requiring stable cool temperatures and constant air movement.
  • Humidity: 80–90%; high humidity is critical at all times.
  • Watering: Keep the medium evenly moist; never allow the roots to dry out between waterings.

Additional Notes

Best grown in fine sphagnum moss or a moisture-retentive mix in a small pot with excellent drainage and strong air circulation to prevent crown rot. Shipped bare root and well established.
